Big W toy sale’s surprise top sellers as families move away from high-tech gadgets and embrace tradition

Forget the latest high-tech gadgets — jigsaw puzzles and board games are tipped to be among the top sellers as one of the State's biggest toy sales gets under way.

Big W's Toy Mania sale is starting today. And a report has found that because so many parents have been spending more time cooped up with the kids, the more traditional toys have risen in popularity.

Sales of children's jigsaw puzzles have jumped 225 per cent compared with this time last year. The shop's emerging trends report showed 55 per cent of parents have been spending more time playing with their children since isolation started.

It found that 83 per cent of parents were using toys for learning and development.

This year, according to Big W, WA families have ranked Lego their number one toy, followed by jigsaws, boardgames, the ever popular vehicles and items based on popular characters, such as Toy Story, Paw Patrol and Peppa Pig.

BIG W chief toy buyer Christine Faulkner said the findings of the report reflected that parents were looking for cost-effective options they could enjoy with their children.

Official Big W toy testers — Perth siblings Matilda, 9, Ruby, 7, and Hudson Faure, 5 — look forward to the sale every year. Their mother Nicole Bradley said they had all started playing more family oriented games during lockdown.

"We've been doing a lot more Lego than normal because we've been home a lot more than we normally would, so that's been something we've all been doing," she said. "Also, board games. We've been playing board games a lot."

The family are behind the popular Perth blog @three littlefaures, which has more than 21,000 followers on Instagram.

When it come to their favourite toys this season, Ms Bradley said her daughters kept it traditional with Barbies and LOL Surprise dolls, while her son Hudson had a new-found love for Nerf guns.

She said price and value for money were at the top of her checklist when it came to what to purchase.

"Mainly price and value for money is important," she said. "Something I know they won't just play with once, something that will last a long time.

"Something that I know that when they open it, it's going to be a hit with them."

The Toy Mania starts online today and in store from Thursday and lasts until July 15. Families can expect to see a wide range of toys, with more than 700 new and old favourites including Barbie, Nerf, Hot Wheels, LEGO, and Fisher Price.
