How to detail scale models and die-casts like real concours show cars

Gambar
In my world of preparing cars for concours events, sometimes I get asked to work on something unusual. One such project was when one of my clients in the Philadelphia area was expecting a special visitor for his collection of 7000 Mercedes-Benz tin toys, models, and die casts. Representatives from the factory itself were coming for a visit, but the cars and shelves were dusty and disorganized. I was given the task of making them shine just like the real thing. After about a month, I had cleaned and detailed every car. It was quite the undertaking, but it inspired a project for my own toys at home. Now that we are all separated by the coronavirus quarantine, I would like to discuss how to properly prepare your model cars for a virtual concours. This requires no special tools, just simple stuff to make your vehicle stand out from the rest of the crowd. Luckily, judges of these virtual, die-cast concours are not sniffing out improper hose clamps and incorrect hardware, so all marque a...

The Evolution Of A 3D Printed Off-Road R/C Car

Gambar
For about as long as hackers and makers have been using desktop 3D printers, there have been critics that say the plastic parts they produce aren't good for much else than toys and decorative pieces. They claim that printed parts are far too fragile to be of any practical use, and are better suited as prototype placeholders until the real parts can be injection molded or milled. Sure. Try telling that to [Engineering Nonsense]. He recently wrote in (as did a few other people, incidentally) to share the latest version of his incredible 3D printed remote control car, and seeing it tearing around in the video after the break, "fragile" certainly isn't a word we'd use to describe it. Though it didn't get that way overnight. The Tarmo4 represents a year of development, and as the name suggests, is the fourth version of the design. We know the purists out there will complain that the car isn't entirely 3D printed, but honestly, it's hard to ima...

San Francisco Firefighters Extend Toy Giveaway to Needy Families Sheltering at Home

Gambar
SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX) — It's Christmas in April for some San Francisco families financially devastated by the coronavirus crisis. The San Francisco Firefighters Toy Program, which has been helping families with donated holiday gifts since 1949, is now retooling its annual giveaway to meet the moment. "These are people who have been struggling and now they're at home with their kids and they need some help," said Jill Peeler, the program's event coordinator. On Thursday, dozens of volunteers, many of them firefighters and union members of the San Francisco Firefighter's Union, Local 798, gathered at a safe social distance to distribute gift bags and groceries. Inside the bags are arts and crafts, puzzles and other toys to help keep kids engaged and occupied while their parents work from home, or in many cases, have been laid off. As select families from the program's Christmas list lined up their cars to receive the donations, firefighters and vol...

Words of love in times like these," Randy Newman sings in his newest coronavirus-inspired track Randy Newman is reminding listeners to stay safe amid the coronavirus pandemic. The Grammy-winner behind classic Toy Story songs including "You've Got a Friend in Me" and "Andy's Birthday" instrumental debuted his newest tune "Stay Away" on Wednesday. It first made waves on radio show AirTalk with Larry Mantle. The songwriter, 76, was asked by the KPCC station to speak about the virus in a PSA and remind folks to stay feet apart and wash their hands frequently, but in his own creative twist, the musician "wrote a song instead," he explained on AirTalk. "I've been asked by KPCC to say some words about social distancing because of my scientific background because apparently there's some disease that's going around," Newman begins. "Stay...
